Bad hair days happen more often than we’d like. So where do they come from, or in other words, how can you avoid them?
First off, let it be known that the state of your hair does not solely depend on your choice of hair-care brands, how often you shampoo or exactly how you style your hair. As we’ve said time and again in our Blog, healthy hair comes from inside—eat well, don’t smoke, stay out of the sun and exercise—chances are you’ll be on the right track, and will have fewer bad hair days to show for it.

There’s nothing like stepping out of a salon after a good blow-out.
To get the full effect at home here are a few things you need to know.
- Your hair should be damp, but not dripping wet. Blow-drying and applying products to wet hair is a recipe for disaster. And don’t continue blow-drying hair that is already totally dry—this is not only counterproductive, but will dry out the hair shaft.
- The perfect blow-out takes time, so don’t rush it. Separate your hair in several sections and work on one section at a time.

Does our hair have to suffer in summer? Well with aggressors ranging from the sun, chlorine and seawater, not to mention the wind, healthy hair is certainly more of a challenge in the hotter months.

So what exactly is this condition? Dandruff means that the dead skin cells on your scalp flake off and your scalp can become excessively itchy. It generally comes from an overly oily scalp, which can be the result of poor hygiene, an unhealthy diet, hormonal imbalances or, last but not least, stress. Overuse of styling products can encourage dandruff as the build-up of products can cause an oily scalp.
There are several ways to treat dandruff, namely washing your hair regularly (yes, it can come from having dirty hair) and using an anti-dandruff shampoo when needed. Don’t use dandruff shampoo every time you wash you hair; it’s best to alternate with your everyday shampoo. Be sure to massage it into your scalp with your fingertips (without digging your nails into your scalp!).
Try an herbal dandruff shampoo first as many of these contain ingredients like tea tree oil and ginger that do wonders to clear up the condition, naturally. (more...)

Being pregnant is a sacred little slice in time, and it brings many changes to a woman’s body. Considering our hair is a fair indicator of our general state of health, the fact that most pregnant women witness their hair growing thicker and more lustrous during those nine months is proof positive of good health. (This is not always the case, however, and while they remain the minority, some soon-to-be mothers find that their hair is drier, more prone to breakage and is even falling out more during pregnancy).
Our hair changes are due to an increase in estrogen levels during pregnancy. This extra estrogen translates into hair and nails that grow thicker, stronger and sometimes faster. You may also experience hair growth where you don’t really want it: on your abdomen, face and sometimes even on your back.
Your normal hair “behavior” might also throw you a curveball—dry hair could become oilier, oily hair become drier, and might gets curlier or straighter.
This is one time in your life when you might want to go more “natural” than usual. Find a hair style that is easy to manage and doesn’t require laborious styling, or a lot of products. Your stylist can suggest a style that is both flattering and easy to care for. (more...)

The 1980s aren’t just making a return in the wardrobe department; models on the runway this spring also donned hairstyles that hark back to the period.
What stood out most in the latest styles was the trend for bleached-blonde hair and even platinum-colored brows.

Short hair is keeping it simple this season. A bob which reaches around ear level is set off with strikingly bold short bangs. (See our post about how to successfully cut your own bangs).
Another option is to have a two-in-one style—a bob with slightly tapered bangs that can be transformed into a softer, more romantic look.

on May 27, 2009 in How to brush/blowdry my Hair

Let it be known that all hairbrushes are not created equal, and this is one item you don’t want to skimp on. Brushing your hair daily is an important part of a good hair care routine as it stimulates the creation of sebum, and helps distribute this natural oil along the hair shaft, creating shinier and smoother locks.
Here’s how to find the brush best adapted to your hair type.
- Don’t fall for plastic brushes with epoxy-tipped metal “bristles” as when these break off, which inevitably they do, they can scratch your scalp and get caught in your hair causing breakage.

Buns are a must for spring/summer 2009, both on and off the runway. A bun must appear casual, yet with a technical bent, stylish yet dishevelled. Clip on a hair accessory for an even more sophisticated touch.
Here’s how to get that perfect bun:
- Tousle your hair dry with your fingers to give it some body.
- Lift and smooth the front of your hair over each ear, and roll these sections into two big rollers on your head like a crown.

Hair coloring has gone mainstream, and there will probably come a time when you too will get on the coloring bandwagon—if you aren’t already.
Getting your hair colored is one thing, but using the right products to maintain shiny and lustrous hair and getting the most out of your color is another. Color-treated hair needs more attention than its natural counterpart as it has undergone a chemical process, and is therefore more fragile.
Here are few rules of thumb you should follow to get the most out of your colored hair:
