We’ve already covered the issue of flyaway hair, but what about static? There are few things more annoying than pulling off your woolly winter cap only to find your hair standing on end.
Although static plagues our hair most often in wintertime, it can also strike in any dry climate.
Basically, the drier your hair, the more susceptible you are to static. So the next piece of advice would be, naturally, to keep your hair in prime moisturized condition no matter what the season. Easier said than done!

Not everyone wants to color their hair with chemicals or even sit through a session at the salon. Some of us would rather have a routine at home to get the most out of our hair color, without resorting to the bottle. Blonde hair can be lightened the easiest, but even darker hair can get lighter naturally.
Here are a few tips:
- Lemon juice is a great and cost-effective way of lightening naturally blonde hair. Just mix lemon juice, about half a cup, and a quarter-cup of leave-on conditioner in a spray bottle. Spritz on dry hair and sit out in the sun for awhile. Don’t overdo it—a half an hour is plenty, and of course don’t sit out in extreme heat. You aren’t out there to bake your hair and skin! The idea is to sit out on a sunny day (don’t forget your sunscreen) and let your hair catch some rays. (more...)

Are you one of those people that runs to the hair stylist religiously every four weeks, or are you more the type to let it go, and not step foot into a salon more than once a year? Well, let’s be honest, chances are the first kind of customer has better hair days than the second.
How often you need to get a cut if you want healthy and vibrant hair depends on your hair, your hairstyle, and of course, your budget.
- Brittle and fragile hair types need more frequent salon visits than most. If this means you, go ahead and get a trim every four to six weeks or so. Take advantage of your visit to purchase a moisturizing treatment, or if you can’t afford salon treatments these days, pick up a stylist-recommended product for home-use.

With their new-fangled “anti-aging” hair care products, marketers are aiming to meet the needs of an increasingly older population. But can we really believe brands’ promises that their products will make our hair “younger”, or at least look younger? Well there’s certainly no denying that our hair changes as we age (see our post on hair and aging), and giving its more loving care can only be a good thing, right?
So-called anti-aging hair care products boast higher doses of vitamins, silicone and most importantly, protein. As hair ages the strands becomes weaker, and therefore more lacking in protein. The addition of protein to the hair shaft, either through styling aids or shampoos and conditioners, means it is being strengthened. (more...)

Our hair grows continually from the time we are born through old age. And just as children go through “growth spurts”, so does our hair—it grows, stops growing, falls out and the process begins anew.
The first part of the cycle, called Anagen, is what is known as the hair shaft’s growth phase. This stage can last from between two to eight years and it’s the space in time when the hair begins its journey from the bulb nestled inside the follicle to the moment it sprouts and grows as a visible strand of hair. Hair fragrance does not fit into most women’s classic hair care routine of shampoo, conditioner, mask and styling agents, but you’d be surprised at the number of consumers that have tried, liked and use this product on a regular basis.
Hair fragrance, also known as hair perfume or mist, is meant to be sprayed onto dry hair. You apply it as you would a classic hair spray, but its purpose is not to give hold, but to leave the hair smelling fresh.
Like any non-essential hair care product, hair fragrance has its pros and its cons.

From auburn and crimson to copper, redheads are a rarity—some figures put them at between 1 and 2% of the world’s population—which is perhaps what makes them so prized. Those women sporting red locks, which are most common in Northern Europe, mainly England, Scotland and Ireland, also usually have pale, freckly sun-sensitive complexions.
While strands of red hair are the thickest—bypassing blonde, brown and black hair—they are also the least dense, so taking good care of your red tresses and watching out for hair loss is essential. (more...)

While brown hair may be considered common, hum-drum, and way less glamorous than blonde hair, it also has a wide and rich variety of shades, ranging from brownish black to light brown.
Brown hair, which is genetically dominant over blonde, is due to a higher concentration of melanin in the hair shaft, and is often matched with brown eyes and a more even, or sometimes olive skin tone. It is the second-most common hair color after black hair. (more...)

Although a large percentage of babies and children have naturally blonde hair, it is less common to keep those golden locks as you grow older, as hair has a tendency to darken with time. Naturally blonde hair is most common in the Northern regions of the globe, such as Scandinavia, with hair types becoming darker the further south one travels.
Perhaps it’s because of its rarity that blonde is such a sought-after color—some statistics claim that less than 3% of the world’s population has naturally blonde hair—and not just because blondes (supposedly) have more fun! (more...)
