But there are a few simple ways to protect your hair that won’t break the bank.

First off, wear a hat. This is the best way to hide your locks from the drying sun and wind, especially when it comes to colored, treated or brittle hair. And the cherry on top? It also protects your face from those damaging UV rays!

But of course there comes a time when the hat must come off. When you’re swimming, be it in a pool or in the sea, your hair is susceptible to the elements. Water expands the hair shaft, while salt and chlorine dry it out, so take steps to nourish your hair. There is a plethora of products available—Phyto Plage Protective Beach Spray is one of our favorites—just spray on your hair before going out in the sun. You can also apply nourishing oils, such as Argan or Olive. After application, if you hair is long enough, tie it up in a loose bun or ponytail.

To avoid blonde hair from going green after swimming in a chlorinated pool, wet your hair with regular water before heading to the pool. Remember, blonde hair can turn green when in prolonged contact with chlorine. After swimming, rinse either with fizzy water or alka seltzer dissolved in water.

Always rinse your hair at the end of the end of the day and use a gentle shampoo to wash out the products you’ve used that leave an oily residue, and the elements.

Apply a hair mask more often in summer; it will replenish the oils that have been stripped away and will give your hair a nutritious boost.

Last but not least, drink a lot of water!
