Tips for Healthy Hair on the Run

Keeping your hair healthy and vibrant when travelling can be a challenge. Airplane travel leeches moisture from both our hair and skin, while changing time zones wreak havoc on our circadian rhythms, which has a knock-on effect on your health in general.
Here are a few tips to follow when you are about to embark.
- Travelling does not mean forgoing your normal hair care routine, but plan ahead.
Remember, today airlines restrict what you can take onboard; creams and liquids up to 100ml (3.4oz) are allowed, but must be sealed in a see-through plastic bag. This regulation is currently under review and may be reversed this year. - Your best bet is to buy travel-sized products (Beauty ID’s specialty! See our On-the-Go Pack). If you can’t find your favorite products in smaller formats, buy reusable travel-sized spray bottles, jars or bottles at your drugstore.
- Don’t apply styling aids that tend to dry out your hair before the flight. If your ’do can’t do without hairspray, choose an alcohol-free product. Ideally, you shouldn’t apply any styling products before a long-haul flight. You can always pop into the ladies room and style your hair before landing!
- For an added moisture kick, apply a leave-in conditioner before your flight. Be sure to choose a product especially formulated not to be rinsed out, such as Phyto 7. Don’t use your regular rinse-out conditioner or mask as they can contain essential oils that could be harmful if left in too long.
- Drink lots of water during the flight. This helps restore lost moisture in both your hair and skin and can even ease the effect of jetlag. Avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol, which also robs moisture from the body.
